The AC blows cold as I remove my bowtie and toss it on the seat next to me on top of my tuxedo jacket.

I turn the AC off and roll down the window.

The balmy air sweeps in the scent of earth, and greenery, the soft breeze unsettling the leaves outside.

The road cuts through clusters of trees, taking us away from the beautiful estates rising at the edge of the meadows and leaving behind the lights, reminding me of the clouds of fireflies swarming the forest in the summer months not far from here near the lake.

This place smells like home.

It is home.

I know every hill, valley, boulder, stretch of woods, almost every home, and kid playing on the front lawn–– even their dogs.

It’s a magical scrap of life, blending the history of this place into this community's modern living along with the change of seasons and lifetime traditions.

It’s pulsing with life, yet it gets quiet in the evenings, and it’s serene, wrapped in the fascinating timelessness of this place.

The air flows into my lungs, helping me clear my mind when a vision pops into my head. I’ve been having it for some time now, and tonight I’ll share it with them.

My elbow rests on the doorframe as I stare blankly at the road, my ride sliding smoothly up the slope.

This is a perfect evening, I muse, a different kind of landscape filling my view.

I’ve driven here by myself many times, and I've thought about it, but I’ve never talked with anyone about it until now.

My car eats a few more miles before running to a smooth stop on the side of the road. Not far from here, a big piece of land sprawls from one stretch of woods to the other.

I turn the engine off and climb out before waiting for Lex to park his ride behind me.

They walk out a moment later, the moon glowing pale blue above us.

“What’s going on?” Ed asks.

They leave their jackets in the car and head to me.

“Is everything okay?” Lex asks, his eyes gleaming in the darkness.

“Yup. I wanted to show you this,” I say, gesturing to the piece of land in front of us. “Follow me.”

I look up and down the road.

There’s not a car in sight as far as I can see, and that’s what I like.

It’s not a very traveled road, and that, to me, it’s a winning point.

I take a few steps in, leaving imprints in the soft ground.

“My shoes are gonna get muddy,” Ed mutters.

“Shut up, princess. You’ll survive,” I say, leading them to the middle of the plateau.

We walk in silence for a few more moments before I stop and turn around.

The place is magnificent, the moon shining across the land, trees, and the road leading to the scattered homes and small town in the distance.

Specks of light pepper the horizon as we stand here in the middle of a deserted area–– a wild, quiet place with a big, round celestial body dangling from the starry sky.
